Legislation changes for transfer duty and payroll tax

The Revenue Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 was passed yesterday and will become law upon royal assent. It will make changes to transfer duty and payroll tax.

  • Transfer duty
    • From 1 May 2025, first home buyers who enter into a contract to purchase a new home to live in (or vacant land on which to build a home to live in) will be able to apply for a full transfer duty concession (reducing the duty to nil).
    • From 6 December 2024, recipients of the home concessions will be allowed to rent part of their property during the 1-year occupation period and keep the full benefit of this relief.
  • Payroll tax
    • From 1 December 2024, wages paid by medical practices to general practitioners are exempt from payroll tax.
